A new exhibit of the month is on view at the entrance to the UPM’s Permanent Collection:
The BOA Design
The BOA design studio was founded by the young designers Petr Mikošek
and Michaela Vrátníková
. Both artists are engaged in projects intended for industrial production in the field of fashion, interior, graphic and product design. Limited collections of fashion and interior accessories are created under the trademark BOA.
In 2008, the Czech Academy of Design nominated the studio for the Czech Grand Design award, namely for its Flame
bag collection shown at Designblok ’08. This collection of ladies’ bags and notebook covers is made of a special kind of material: two metal plates joined using a 1.5 milimetre-thick layer of polymer. This light and sufficiently solid material protects items inside the bag against mechanical impact. The metal plates are cut into individual segments, which gives the bag utmost flexibility, while creating a distinctive surface ornamentation that glimmers in the light. In designing the Flame collection, its authors sought inspiration in the bodies of mollusks whose hard shells provide protection, while facilitating motion.
This year, BOA studio donated a large representative collection of bags to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.
