Jan Lukas (1915 České Budějovice—2006 New York) was in the 1930s considered a Wunderkind of Czech photography. He began to publish at seventeen. He collaborated in particular with journals Eva and Ahoj na neděli, but also contributed to foreign periodicals. He employed his documentary skill in many towns and cities of Europe and North Africa; at home he focused mainly on themes connected with modern lifestyle. At the same time he worked on the series The Earth and People, which he presented for the first time in 1939 at the legendary exhibition of the group ‘Seven’ in October. A small-scale exhibition at the Josef Sudek Gallery returns to the avant-garde roots of Lukas’s humanistic art.
