The purpose of the exhibition The Horizons of Czech Textile (on view last year in the exhibition halls of The Design Centre of the Czech Republic in Prague and Brno) is to familiarize the public with the latest achievements in the Czech production of textiles, both traditional and technical, and to provide information about the quality of contemporary Czech textile design.

The development of textile production in industrialized countries, including the Czech Republic, must necessarily be focused on the manufacture of high added value products, so-called ‘intelligent textiles’ (also owing to the competitive nature of ‘cheap textiles’ from Asian countries). The unique properties of these fabrics predestine them to be applied in such fields as civil engineering, water management, food industry, agriculture, sanitary aids and protective clothing manufacture, medicine, the automotive industry, aviation, and the defence, chemical and space industries. These non-traditional fabrics, known as technical textiles, offer excellent prospects to Czech textile manufacturers: with respect to the high-tech production process involved, they need not momentarily concern themselves with cheap Asian competition. Moreover, the demand for these fabrics is rapidly growing. These goods are sought after not only by clients in the aforesaid industries, but ever more so by producers of footwear, carpets, sportswear fabrics and home textiles.

Clothing textiles, home furnishings and other types of fabrics, which – apart from practicality – fulfil an aesthetic function, are enhanced by added value not only through the use of synthetic fibres and materials (e.g. Gore-Tex, Sympatex, Moira, nanofibre non-woven fabrics), but also through original, imaginative and aesthetically pleasing designs created by skilful and experienced textile designers. Such fabrics are particularly interesting to producers of clothing textiles, interior design fabrics and limited-series textiles, to producers with a vision who respond flexibly and efficiently to the demands of the market, entailing processors of those producers’ textile goods, as well as textile design studios and fashion houses.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to inspect samples of a wide variety of textiles, arranged on display counters into colour groups that evoke the months of the seasons. On panels, they will find a presentation of some thirty fields in which fabrics are used today. The exhibition catalogue will explore momentous events in the history of textile-making in the Bohemian lands, from prehistoric times to the present.

The organizers’ objective has been to evoke the atmosphere of textile trends exhibitions, salons and trade fairs. The exhibition will include an array of illustrative material and written documents mapping the current situation of Czech textile. Some one thousand annotated pattern samples, which the visitors are invited to touch, will also be displayed on the counters.
