The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague participated in the noteworthy international exhibition “PhotoEspaňa 2009” with a display of photographs by Jindřich Štyrský made in 1934—35. The title of the exhibition “On the Needles of These Days” alludes to a book by the same name comprising images from his photographic series created during the 1930s, accompanied by poems written by Jindřich Heisler. The book had been prepared for clandestine publication one year prior to the artist’s death, but appeared in print only after the war. The exhibition offered a similar, well-balanced selection of photos from the artist’s main thematic areas — funeral objects, circuses, shooting galleries and shop windows — in the form of one hundred original enlargements and original adjusted contact prints. The exhibition also included Štyrský’s book designs emphasizing the use of photography and reflecting various stylistic approaches ranging from Poetism through Surrealism, to socially-oriented avant-garde photography. Featured in the exhibition installation were fragments of poems by Štyrský, published posthumously in the book “Jindřich Štyrský — Poesie”.
