July 28th — June 22nd

The International Ceramics Symposium at Bechyně has been held continuously since 1966, making it the oldest regularly-held event of its kind in Europe. Every two years, a different group of artists gathers at the symposium in the town’s inspiring environment with the purpose of presenting their creative skills in the form of sculptures and objects made of ceramic clays. These artefacts fall in the category of both fine and applied arts. Many of the works enter the collections of the International Ceramics Museum in Bechyně and other institutions, including the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and the National Gallery in Prague.

The symposium has also met with enthusiastic acclaim in other parts of the world, particularly the United States and countries noted for their outstanding ceramics tradition – Japan, South Korea and China.

The 23rd symposium, held from July 28 to August 22, 2008, will host a total of ten artists from the Czech Republic, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and the United States.
On August 22, 2008, the works created at the symposium will be on view in the building of the Secondary Technical School of Ceramics in Bechyně.
