The book “Biedermeier: Art and Culture in the Bohemian Lands 1814–1848”, published by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague in collaboration with the Gallery publishing house, won the first prize in the Gloria Musaealis 2008 National Contest, in the category The Museum Publication of 2008. The prize was the seventh such award conferred by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Czech Association of Museums and Galleries. The purpose of the contest is to bring to public attention museums’ and galleries’ undertakings of exceptional merit in the field of research and public promotion of cultural heritage. The awarded volume explores a broad range of Biedermeier-style fine and applied arts in the Bohemian lands. It is for the first time that this distinctive artistic and ideological movement, which had a strong creative impact on Czech culture and the arts of the first half of the 19th century and which presaged many principles of Modernism, particularly in the way of life and design, is presented on such a comprehensive scale. The volume was published to accompany the exhibition by the same name, which took place in summer 2008 at Prague Castle’s Riding School. The event was also favourable acknowledged by the jury: it is one of the contest’s three prize-winning art projects in the category The Exhibition of the Year. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague organized and mounted the Biedermeier exhibition in partnership with the Prague Castle Administration.
