UPM, inv. no. 102 663, 102 664

Sheila Hicks was born in 1934 in Nebraska, USA. In 1954–59, she studied painting and architecture at Yale University under Professor Josef Albers. Hicks is a one of the leading figures in textile art worldwide, who has significantly influenced its development. While she employs a great variety of uncustomary creative methods, her interest is centred on colour and texture, particularly the inherent qualities of fibre such as silk, linen, wool, cotton and coconut fibre. She also uses steel wire, metal strips and other materials. Sheila Hicks has traveled widely for study and work purposes through South America, India and Africa. In 1964, she moved to Paris, where she has been living and working since. The artist has created a host of monumental installations for interior spaces of prominent buildings in the United States, Europe and Japan. She has held numerous exhibitions internationally and has received many awards, e.g. a Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects and a Medal of Fine Arts from the French Academy of Architecture.
Thanks to Sheila Hicks’s warm feelings toward the Czech Republic, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague obtained several large and small works from the artist.
