A new exhibit of the month is on view at the entrance to the UPM’s Permanent Collection — the set of spring accessories:
Hat with rep ribbons
Bohemia, c. 1928
Natural fibre mesh
Western or Central Europe, c. 1930
Skate skin, white metal mounts
Gloves with embroidered cuffs
Bohemia, c. 1930
Leather (probably goatskin)
Sunny spring days would send the women and young ladies of the interwar period hunting for new cloths or, barring that, at least new accessories.
It would have been unthinkable to leave the house without a hat, a pair of gloves, a bag, an adorable pair of shoes, and stockings. She would most likely own a different matched set of accessories for each dress or suit in her wardrobe.
