Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague
A retrospective exhibition by Jiří Pelcl (born 1950) SUBJECTIVE x OBJECTIVE features works of this respected authority of contemporary design from the period from the mid—1990s up to now. In accordance with the title, it highlights the relationship between a subjective approach of the designer with objective requirements of his work. The contradiction between these two notions is relative since all good design contains something from the originality of its author and at the same time it has to serve the people, to whom it is designated.

Jiří Pelcl made a name for himself with the Czech and international expert and lay public as early as the late 1980s as the founding member of the designer group Atika. He has devoted himself to design within his studio Ateliér Pelcl and elsewhere in addition to teaching at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design. Since 1997 he has been the Head of the Department of Interior and Furniture Design; in the years 2002—2005 he was the Rector of this Academy.

Jiří Pelcl deals with furniture design and interior design, designs glass and porcelain and collaborates with a number of industrial plants. In addition to teaching at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design he also gives lectures at other Czech and foreign universities and colleges. He has had 20 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 100 group exhibition concerning design. His oeuvre is regularly published in the expert press and books. The exhibition takes place within the project Designblok ’06.
