The world exposition Expo 58 in Brussels, primarily the Czechoslovak participation in it, is a legend here in the Czech Republic. For the lay public the Laterna Magika is the biggest attraction, specifically the decorative style rising from the cosmic euphoria of sputnik and the boom in plastics, pastel colours, typically diagonal elements and organic shapes. But real awareness about it is dying away. Despite the long-term attraction of the Brussels phenomenon no significant professional attention has been devoted to it. This exhibition, conceived of as a multimedia presentation and also an extensive accompanying publication, tries to bring us closer to the real form of Expo 58 and appraise its significance at the artistic, political and sociological levels.
Above all the exhibition, prepared to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Expo, should try and get close to the original form of the Czechoslovak pavilion by means of authentic exponents, documentation and period photographs. Its second part recalls its influence in sundry cultural spheres at the turn of the 50´s and 60´s — at a time when there were significant social changes, developments in the media, especially radio and television broadcasting and the rise of pop culture.
