Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague
The exhibition offers an overview of European posters from the holdings of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.
The majority of posters on view date from the turn of the 20th century, when the decorative style known as Sezession in Vienna, Art Nouveau in Paris and Western Europe, and Jugendstil in Germany was at the height of popularity. The works on display were created not only in such cultural centres as Paris and Vienna, but also in various cities throughout Belgium, Germany and Italy. The exhibition’s second largest section is devoted to modernist art produced in the 1920s and early 1930s in France, Holland, Germany and Hungary. This display is accompanied by posters reflecting the popular mass culture of the period.
Thematically, the exhibits include exhibition announcements, entertainment advertisements, tourist flyers and ads for newly emerging products of “mass consumption“, as well as for somewhat curious objects.
The exhibition presents a number of works unknown to date, some of them internationally unique, and posters whose design is derived from the academic tradition of painting and graphic arts.

Guided tours (in Czech) will take place on May 5 and 26, 2009, at 5 p.m. in the exhibition spaces of Clam-Gallas Palace.
