Sheila Hicks is one of the creative personalities who defined the direction of textile art’s development in the second half of the twentieth century. In the 1960s she became a protagonist of the changes breaking down the borders between free art and materially determined genres. The uniqueness of her art consists in a free and inventive relationship to traditional techniques. Her interest is focused on the expressive possibilities of structure and colour, with particular attention given to the specific qualities of the material, be it linen, wool, steel wire, rubber bands or shoelaces. During her fifty-year creative journey, she has created large-format works intended for representative interiors, conceptual installations as well as miniatures.
