Dana Vachtová’s drawings
from the late 1950s and the first half of the 1960s are a seemingly short and forgotten evidence of the artist’s early period, however, from today’s point of view they play a surprisingly important role. Not only for their integrity and thoroughly-developed final form in which spontaneity merges with the need of simple construction, since they do not represent a mere search or a sketch for her later works but they already were a self-contained definition of issues related to form and space. A similar approach to these issues is apparent in her later works both in her treatment of classical sculptural material and in her glass objects. The drawings even suggest some of her subjects — distinctly figural drawings dealing with the relationship between body and space, they anticipate her polished aluminium or bronze sculptures, while the series Elements refers to glass. The drawings polarize mainly the relation to matter — simple and simultaneously dramatic architecture of figures is confronted with forms capturing changes, moments of birth, flow, often with elementary geometrical forms and surfaces. Dana Vachtová’s approach to sculptural expression was influenced by Josef Kaplický’s sculptures as well as his way of thinking and it also stems from the orientation of the entire contemporary generation on Modernism (especially the work of Henri Moore); the leading figures changing the context at that time were artists of the Informel, known from the exhibitions entitled Confrontations in the 1960s.
In her drawings from the first half of the sixties Dana Vachtová reveals other subject-matters perceptible in the series of several unique drawings entitled later Landscape/Space.These drawings in fact lead to painting and freed from sculptural perspective they form their own specific vocabulary. Here her drawing reaches the peak of its possibilities but at the same time reaches its end.
