Description

The artworks of Bohemia and Moravia in the first half of the 19th century reflect a distinctive artistic and ideological trend – Biedermeier. The exhibition guide shows the true face of Biedermeier as a lifestyle and artistic style created by the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie, which gradually affected all levels of society. In the spirit of the emerging civil society, it espoused the ideals of practicality and simplicity, discovering the charm of everyday things and pleasures, as well as the beauty of nature and natural materials. The sober elegance and matter-of-factness – the hallmarks of the Biedermeier aesthetic – reflected the overall modernisation of society and became a harbinger of modern design.
