Curator: Jan Mlčoch
Graphic design: Štěpán Malovec
The photographic legacy of Vladimír Ambros (1945–1998) has survived only in a fragmented state. Ambros worked as a curator for the prints collection at the National Gallery Prague, and later at the National Heritage Institute. Alongside his professional career, he was a dedicated photographer who sought out themes outside the mainstream art current, capturing the activities of non-official artists. His body of work spans conceptually themed photographs as well as distinctive portraits. Ambros was also among the few to recognize early on the significance of Jan Svoboda’s work, an influence that was directly projected into his diploma thesis. Furthermore, his 1986 graduation publication, Drug Rehabilitation Centre, remains an entirely exceptional achievement. This exhibition is a profound expression of gratitude to his family, who donated a portion of his photographic estate to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. It is only through this generous gift that we are able to commemorate Ambros’s work today.
